Indexing in the backend/Components/Smart search shows this error:
An Error Has Occurred
The following message was returned by the server:
A parse error has occurred while processing the following JSON data:
Unexpected token '<', "<br /> <b>"... is not valid JSON

I've narrowed it down to jevents smart search plugin

Checking the 'network' tab in the browser console we can see the XHR requests that populate the index. I see

<b>Deprecated</b>: trim(): Passing null to parameter #1 ($string) of type string is deprecated in <b>/var/www/html/libraries/vendor/joomla/registry/src/Format/Json.php</b> on line <b>56</b><br />
<br />

I set error reporting to none to suppress this error (not sure where its coming from).
