Hi there I am using JEvents on a website I am building, where I need different groups of users to be able to edit and add to different categories of the calendar and Only that category. Is there any way of doing this with the free version of JEvents?

yes that is possible just using JEvents main component only.
You may just use Joomla! ACL and set up your categories with correct permissions or if you need fine grain permission assignment you may use the Authorised User Mode which will allow you to define specific permissions per user of your site.
