I want to set up a calendar that is completely set in the past say from 1937 to about 1985. I can't seem to get it to work.

To do that you would need the time limit plugin which is available to silver members. and if you want to start on a year I could look to add that as a config option. Or you can go to that year, copy the URL then create an external link menu item.
