Just wondering how I would go about translating to Irish. I’m not sure I have time at the moment to do a full translation, but the parts visible on the front-end would be a good start.

I’m setting up a multi-lingual site (Irish & English) if that makes any difference.
Hello!

Oh that would be good. carcam should be able to get you setup as a translator .

Many thanks

Well, I did do a bunch of this, but ran out of time. Coming back to it there are a couple of strings where I wasn’t sure of the context.

No events for
(JEV NO EVENTFOR)
No event for the
(JEV NO EVENTFORTHE)
Events for
(JEV EVENTSFOR)
Events for
(JEV EVENTSFORTHE)

Any examples of how these are used?

I‘m also wondering, once it’s done, how I can use the translation on the site I’m doing it for.

Hey,

Ok so:

1. No events for this category

We generalise the string so No Event for can be translated once for numerous jobs

2. Similar to above

3. Similar to above

4. This should be: Events for the

Many thanks

Thanks for your reply.

That probably means there’s no way to translate them with any kind of proper grammar.

E.g.

Category: Catagóir

No events for this category:

Gan imeacht sa chatagóir seo (“in this category”)
Gan imeacht don chatagóir seo (“for/to this category”)
Gan imeacht le haghaidh na catagóire seo (“for” requiring genitive case)

This kind of string reuse makes sense for programmers, but often generates complete gibberish in localisations.

As you Know English does not have complex grammar, and not that many languages uses them. I'm only acquainted with Spanish French and German, and only latest has this kind of complexity. Anyway in Spanish we face this situation from time to time and the best solution at the moment is to pick up the most generic situation and use it for the translation.

It’s not possible though because then Catagóir would be spelled wrong when used by itself. Actually, maybe even the word Category is taken from Joomla anyway so it can’t be changed.

This is a problem for all Celtic languages and any language with a case system, which is many. All Slavic languages I think.

As you say, we can only work around it, but it’s still worth pointing out that this is a very bad practice. It also reflects on JEvents down the track, as it ends up looking amateurish and unprofessional.

Hi

in the past I got several times free support although I am using the free edition of Jevents. That's the reason why I would like to contribute myself. For example I could help translating the German language files. I would like to apply as a translator.

Kind regards
Chris

Hi carcam

I am a little bit disappointed since the German language package is still from 27 April 2015. Are you not satisfied with my translation? Or do I need to complete the translation for the addons as well before the German language pack can be published?

Kind regards
Chris

Hi Chris,
I'm really sorry for this. I have to make some updates to the translators generator and didn't find the time. So the package was delayed.

I will publish the updates manually this week. Sorry for the delay and thank you very much for your great contribution!!

Hi carcam

thank you for the update. I found it yesterday and installed it immediately. My translation took effect for some terms but it did NOT for some terms. What is weird: a number of terms that were correct German have changed to English after the update. Especially in the "Create Event" section (see attachment).

Kind regards
Chris
