First Repeat Start layout field

When I use {{First Repeat Start::FIRSTREPEATSTART}} in my list row detail, this date only shows up for event that have already started and is blank for upcoming events. Am I doing something wrong?

I'm using the free version of 3.4.39 JEvents on a Joomla 3.7.2 site. I'm evaluating it to see if it will work for what I need.
