I have a category titled "Prior this Year". It is accessed via a joomla menu. The resulting p shows 2 copies of the category (I woud prefer to not to show the category at all.) See attached image.

Is this a JEvents Category view?
You could try a JEvents Range View instead with a single selected category which would stop showing the category and just show events within the list view.
