is it possible to set the view to the By Month as default instead of the list ?

In the menu item you can select the menu item type. So on the menu item you click to access the calendar, you can click edit and then select Monthly Calendar as the menu item type.
If you are accessing that view from a module, then in the module set the target menu item within the module to a monthly calendar menu item.
I will let Tony do his magic to help you sort it, but it maybe due to your SEO re-write settings for the site try turning that off and see if you can get it to work.
